We like to take a look at the SMMT new car registration tables on a regular basis as these provide an interesting overview of the state of the new car industry. Taking a look at the March 2022 car sale figures was particularly interesting – we found that during this month the Tesla Model Y was not only the most popular electrica car in the UK, it was the most popular car overall in the UK!
This new Tesla is effectively a ‘tall’ Tesla Model 3, offering a large amount of additional space with all the usual Tesla features. While the increased weight and drag of this new car means that it has a slightly reduced range, this does not seem to have disuaded buyers. As we mentioned previously, the Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling car in the UK in December 2021, so it seems that Tesla continues to dominate the electric vehicle market in the UK.
While Tesla has managed to maintain their top position so far, competition is seriously hotting up among the traditional carmakers – making the future of the electric car market very uncertain. Models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Honda-e bring a dose of style to proceedings – in contrast to the rather blobby proportions of the current Teslas. Volkswagen Group is also pouring a huge amount of money into electric vehicles and seem to be releasing a new car every week at this point – one of our current favourites is the excellent Audi Q4 e-tron.
This is all good news for electric car buyers, as increased competition is likely to result in better products and increased choice. We look forward to seeing what new vehicles are released over the next few years, and will bring you information about all new developments via this blog!
